Monday, June 27th, 2011 (Day 11)
This morning we woke up and Larry & Eleanor made us some pancakes and eggs. We took some pictures with them, thanked them dearly for everything, and we were on our way.
We thought we would have some nice side wind today but it ended up being close to 15 mph headwind, and we could only hold 17 mph for the morning. So we rode for an hour then got Adam a new shifter, which broke back near Fremont, NE. He had been riding with one gear since then!
The owner of the shop we went to wasn't in, but someone who had been watching us prowl around town in our velos looking for the shop helped us out by giving the owner a call.
The owner's name was Shane. He was really cool, he came to the shop just to help us out. Within a few minutes of the phone call, Shane arrived on a Surly bicycle. He ended up giving Adam a whole new shifter and cables for free, and charged him nothing for the labor either. He even gave both of us some Stinger waffle energy things that were delicious. We took some pictures with him, thanked him for his help, and we were on our way again.

The next 15 miles sucked. It got pretty hilly and the headwind picked up. After a bit we stopped for lunch and afterwards the wind died down. From there on we kept a pretty good pace until making it to Sutherland, NE.
When we made it to town a fat guy on a youth girl's mountain bike came up to us and told us about how he lost his license, how he got in a motorcycle accident, where things were located in town, how we should NOT go to the pool in town because they 'poured the concrete wrong,' and he told us that we should camp by the train tracks.
He kept rambling on and on and eventually we got creeped out and rode away from him while he was in mid-sentence.
We found the pool the guy told us not to go to and they told us they were open for another hour, so they let us in for half price. It was SO nice after a long day of riding, and to our delight, there were a bunch of cute lifeguards that seemed very interested in us, bunching up in groups, pointing at us and giggling - which was refreshing after not seeing any girls our age for days! Even though nothing came of it, we appreciated the female attention while we swam.
Tonight we set up camp at the park right next to the pool we swam at, and for dinner we walked over to the snack shack set up for the little league softball game that was going on that night. We got some hot dogs and watched the game for awhile before going to bed.
