Sunday, June 26th, 2011 (Day 10)
This morning we packed up and went to a place called "Waffles 'nd More" for breakfast, which was actually pretty good. A guy walked in dressed like a pirate, carrying a huge backpack. He later came up to us and told us he heard about what we were doing and informed us that he and two of his friends had carved a boat out of a tree trunk using hand tools, and that they were taking it from Denver down south. I thought that was pretty cool!
We had a kickass day today after we left the waffle house. We went 47 miles with just a brief piss break in Grand Island, NE, then we went another 35 miles without stopping, putting us at 82 miles. After a short break we rode another 24 to Lexington, NE.
Just as we were about to enter Lexington, I heard Adam yell something to me. Thinking that we were here, I started sprinting, excited that the day was over. I sprinted until I got to a gas station in Lexington. Turns out that Adam was cheering that we had broken 100 miles today, and that I sprinted almost 7 miles after riding a century for no reason. This was the first time either of us had ever done a century ride.
We sat there for a few minutes and a man and his wife pulled up in their car, telling us they were impressed with our speed because they saw us in the previous town before we left. Their names were Larry & Eleanor. While I talked to them, Adam talked to a "large fellow" in a pickup truck.
I couldn't hear them, but Adam explained to me what happened later:
"He was asking me about the velos for awhile, and after we finished talking he drove off, but then he turned around in the street and came back up to me and said 'Hey, you're cute, are you homo?' so I was like 'WHAT THE $%&#?!' and I grabbed my knife, got in my velo, and rode to the other side of the parking lot."
Bike touring is fun and you meet a lot of characters along the way, but yeah... some of them are less cool than others. Be careful out there.
Larry & Eleanor gave us their basement to stay in tonight. When we got to their house, they gave us ice cold lemonade and popsicles. We sat outside on some swinging benches they had and talked to them while we waited for a meat lover's pizza to arrive that they ordered just for us.
The sun was low in the sky and it was the perfect temperature outside. They live in a nice quiet neighborhood. Our velomobiles sat in Larry & Eleanor's driveway and soon the whole neighborhood was over at their home, investigating the scene.
After everyone left, their friend from the newspaper came over and interviewed us and took about a million and a half pictures of us & the velos.
Larry & Eleanor are awesome people to stay with. They gave us some home made ice cream tonight and let us use the computer to upload more pictures, in addition to leaving us their washer and dryer to use tonight and we had the basement to sleep in. If you guys are reading this, thank you so much!
Today we ended up riding 106.8 miles, our record for the trip in one 24 hour period so far.
We were too busy riding today to take any pictures, our apologies!
